On Friday 20 May, we celebrated World Metrology Day – a day that recognises the contribution of all those that work in intergovernmental, national and local metrology organisations and laboratories.
We also celebrated one of our very own, Annalyse Ryan, receiving the joint Metrology Society of Australasia NZ Emerging Metrologist of the Year Award!
Annalyse is a Metrologist that has been working in our Measurement & Calibration Centre in Auckland for three years. She admits that initially, metrology was not the path she expected to go down.
“It’s quite a niche science, but it’s extremely important to everyday life. Everything you do is related to metrology. How do you know the shoes you’re buying are the correct size?”
The field of metrology is broad, and our team are experts in dimensional analysis, calibration, and machinery alignment.
Annalyse is responsible for calibrating measuring equipment for customers that require accurate measuring tools, calibrating anything from steel rulers to measuring wheels that measure lengths of fabrics in factories.
“We make sure that equipment is measuring correctly and provide our customers with quality assurance. We even mapped out the dimensions of an America’s Cup yacht – we do a lot of confidential work in the healthcare and aviation sectors.”
Annalyse says that working in the metrology industry for the MCC has allowed her to have the career stability that she’s always wanted.
“I’m so grateful to the MSA for developing this award and recognising metrology careers. I really enjoy being a part of the industry and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.
This is a fantastic achievement for Annalyse, and really highlights the outstanding work she does in the metrology space, which you can hear all about in this video.
A huge congratulations to Annalyse and her co-winner, Shairae, and well done to all the nominees!
